Buddha Dordenma Statue

Home / Bhutan / Attractions / Buddha Dordenma Statue

Great Buddha Dordenma is a prominent landmark attraction in Bhutan. This larger than life Shakyamuni Buddha statue celebrates the 60th anniversary of fourth king Jigme Singye Wangchuck. This giant golden Buddha statue sits at one of the mountains in Thimphu known as Kunzangphodrang.

The Great Buddha Dordenma is the largest Buddha rupa in the world, standing at a height of 169 feet. The statue was initially made in China and was later shipped to Bhutan by cutting it into pieces. Due to its beautiful location, the Statue flaunts remarkable views of the majestic Thimphu Valley. The presence of the statue reflects the dominant religion in Bhutan.

Buddhism is the major religion followed by the Bhutanese. Their love for their religion and culture is visible in the string of prayer flags along road sides, the numerous prayer wheels surrounding the clock tower in the center of town, the small chortens (small religious temples) and the numerous paintings and offerings on the walls of rock and cement.
Another interesting feature of this statue is that there are hundred thousand smaller Buddha statues hidden inside it. All the little statues are made of bronze with gold polish. Out of all the statues, 100,000 statues are 8 inches tall and 25,000 statues are 12 inches tall. The Great Buddha Dordenma has been placed in the centre of the ruins of Kuensel Phodrang.

Another interesting fact is that the statue cost almost $100 million to build when it was constructed in 2015. The best time to spot the masterpiece is early mornings and late evenings, when it remains illuminated with thousands of lights. The surroundings of the statue exude heavenly aura and is the perfect place to meditate for the ones seeking peace.

The statue also fulfils two prophecies. The first is that a Buddhist statue would be built in the region to “bestow blessings, peace, and happiness to the whole world.” In addition, the statue is said to have been mentioned by Guru Padmasambhava, widely referred to as the “second Buddha,” in the eighth century.
